20 Toronto Street Conferences and Events (OBA Conference Centre)

Andrew Pinto was appointed to conduct a review of the new Ontario Human Rights system created from fundamental changes to the Human Rights Code effective June 30, 2008.  As part of his review, Mr. Pinto consulted with key stakeholders, human rights advocates, experts and individual members of the public.  The review examined core issues including: whether the new system is effective in its goal to provide quicker, less costly direct access to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario ("Tribunal"); whether the new Human Rights Legal Support Centre ("HRLSC") is effective in providing information, support, advice, assistance and legal representation for those seeking a remedy before the Tribunal; and, whether the Ontario Human Rights Commission ("Commission"), in its new role, is proactively addressing systemic human rights issues.  Mr. Pinto will discuss his findings and recommendations following the release of his report, followed by an insightful dialogue and question and answer period with key players from the HRLSC, the Commission and counsel who are active in representing their clients before the Tribunal.

 Highlights:
 •  Where Have We Been and Where Do We Go From Here?
 •  Ethical Considerations In a System Driven by Self-Represented Applicants
