Panellist Bios 

Karen Wensley is the author of the recent book The Power of Personal Branding for Career Success and a frequent speaker on the subject to corporations, universities and women's groups.  She provides consulting services to businesses in the areas of HR strategy, executive coaching and team effectiveness services. She also teaches business ethics at the University of Waterloo and writes the ethics column for CPA Magazine. Karen retired as a partner of Ernst & Young Canada in 2010, where she spent most of her career as a tax partner and then became the national Human Resources leader.

Karen is a member of the board of directors of Trillium Heath Partners and Gore Mutual Insurance.  A former director of the Information Technology Association of Canada, in 2013 Karen wrote a white paper for ITAC entitled "Gender diversity of boards of directors of Canadian ICT companies: Where we are, Why it matters, and Overcoming the challenges."


Jennifer Reynolds is the President & CEO of Women in Capital Markets and has been an active advocate and supporter of the advancement of women in the industry over her career. Prior to joining WCM, Jennifer spent 15 years working in the capital markets industry, most recently as a Managing Director and Head of the Diversified Industries Investment Banking group with Stonecap Securities. Jennifer has also held senior roles in investment banking with BMO Capital Markets and in the venture capital industry with OMERS Ventures.

Jennifer is an Honorary Chair of the Princess Margaret Weekend to End Women's Cancers and is a former Director and Chair of the Board of the Microskills Business Incubator and Director on the Board of Studio 180, an independent, Toronto based theatre company.


Beth Horowitz is a Board Member of HSBC Bank Canada and Aimia Inc. She is a former President & CEO, AMEX Bank of Canada, a role which she held from 2002 to 2007. During her 22-year American Express career, Beth's other leadership roles included SVP, International Product Strategy & Development, and VP, Quality & Reengineering. She also served on Amex's Global Diversity Council. 

Beth's non-profit board affiliations include the Art Gallery of Ontario (Board of Trustees), Junior Achievement of Central Ontario (Board of Governors), the Schulich School of Business (Dean's Advisory Board), Catalyst Canada (Advisory Board) and the Harvard Business School Club of Toronto (Board of Directors). Beth is also a member of the Marketing and Communications Advisory Board for the McEwen Center for Regenerative Medicine. 


Tamara Paton serves on the Board of Directors of Carson-Dellosa Publishing, an educational publisher backed by Birch Hill Equity Partners. She is also a director on the boards of Meridian Credit Union and Mountain Equipment Co-op. In addition, Tamara is actively involved with the Canadian Automobile Association, serving as the chair of one of its nine regional clubs. Because she loves all things digital, Tamara feels fortunate to support digital consultancy ServoAnnex as an advisory board member.

Outside of her work as a corporate director, Tamara facilitates strategy off-sites for senior teams and boards, continuing her past work as a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company. Her clients hail from a wide range of industries, but typically transform media, digital commerce and other innovative consumer-facing sectors.

Hilary Book is a partner with WeirFoulds LLP's litigation practice, and has experience in a broad variety of commercial litigation disputes. She focuses on complex commercial litigation. and has acted in a wide variety of matters, including shareholder disputes, oppression claims, breach of contract cases, real estate disputes and bankruptcy and insolvency matters.

Hilary is the leader of WeirFoulds Women, the firm's women lawyers' group, and is Co-Chair of the Students' Committee.  She is a member of The Advocates' Society's Young Advocates' Standing Committee, where she is involved in initiatives on civil justice reform and diversity.  Hilary is a long-time volunteer with Pro Bono Law Ontario, and currently volunteers for its Court of Appeal amicus duty counsel program.  She is also former board member of two charitable organizations.

Lisa Borsook is the Executive Partner of WeirFoulds LLP, responsible for client engagement and development. Lisa was the firm's managing partner from 2007 to 2012, making her one of only a few women to have served as Managing Partner of a law firm in Canada. Lisa is Chairperson of the firm's Commercial Leasing Practice Group and a member of the Business Law Group. 

Lisa is a member of the Dean's Council of the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, the Board of Directors of the Women's Brain Health Initiative, the Advisory Board for the Canadian General Counsel Award, and the Sponsorship Committee of the Ontario Bar Association/New York Bar Summit. Lisa was a member of the Steering Committee for the Law Society's Retention of Women in Private Practice Working Group in connection with the Justicia Project. She chairs the Bay Street Division of 2015 UJA Campaign.

    Full Biography

    For more than 25 years Lisa has used her extensive management, legal and business experience to run her successful and vibrant practice that includes a vast array of clients, both large and small, local, regional, national and international, as well as numerous governments and government agencies, in connection with their infrastructure, retail, industrial, office and brownfields properties.

    As one of the first women managing partners of a major law firm, Lisa fought to bring issues concerning women in the workplace to the forefront in her work and continues to be a champion of these causes both in the legal and business marketplace. In recognition of her work Lisa has received numerous awards. From 2013 to 2016, she was selected as one of Women's Executive Network's (WXN) Top 100: Most Powerful Women in Canada and in 2016 was inducted into its Hall of Fame. Also in 2016, Lisa received the Laura Legge Award from the Law Society of Upper Canada in recognition of her contributions to women in the profession and in 2017 was honoured by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) for Excellence in Law. In addition, Lisa received the ICRF Women of Action award, recognizing extraordinary achievements in business in 2012 and the Zenith Award in recognition of her accomplishments as a leading business lawyer and a leading woman in the business of law in 2009.

    Lisa works diligently in support of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. She represents WeirFoulds as a member of the Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network. She is also currently a member of the Equity Advisory Group of the Law Society of Upper Canada and was member of the Steering Committee for the Law Society's Retention of Women in Private Practice Working Group in connection with the Justicia Project.

    As an active member of the International Women's Federation, in 2019 Lisa will co-chair their national convention to be convened in Toronto. In addition to this, she regularly speaks on the topic of diversity and inclusion, for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association and numerous other organizations.

    Lisa is well-known to her clients for her strategic focus, exceptional problem solving skills, entrepreneurial business sense and management skills that build trust, harmony and consensus. She has been repeatedly recognized as at the top of her fields by her peers and in a large variety of directories and ranking bodies including Best Lawyers in Canada, Lexpert®, Legal 500, and as the recipient of the OBA Award of Excellence in Real Estate in 2015.

    Recognizing the importance of helping young professionals grow and achieve success, Lisa has been a mentor for a number of years with various organizations including WXN and NAIOP and was also an advisory board member for the Young Women in Law organization.

    Lisa is an ICD.D certified board candidate and a member of the Canadian Board Diversity Council's 2016 Diversity 50 – Canada's Most Diverse Board Candidates. She serves on the board of the Sunnybrook Foundation, which supports the advancement of world-class health sciences centre through active fundraising in support of research, education and equipment initiatives at Sunnybrook, the Women's Brain Health Initiative, a charitable foundation devoted to funding research into brain related issues affecting women, on the advisory board for the Canadian General Counsel Awards and as a board member for SCG Legal, an international organization of law firms, of which the firm is also a member. Lisa also served on the advisory council for the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University for three years.
