Nikiforos Iatrou speaks to Law Times about the high barriers for private actions at the Competition Tribunal

Law Times, SEPTEMBER 18, 2017

WeirFoulds Partner Nikiforos Iatrou spoke to Law Times about the difficulties private parties face to commence applications before Canada's Competition Tribunal.

In the article, Niki says it makes sense to make it easier to start more private actions.

"You're dealing with a Competition Bureau that is resource-restrained — they're not going to bring every case that comes to them by way of a complaint," says Niki.

He says that while the threshold for leave under the Competition Act was meant to be low, the way it has been applied means that very few cases have made it through to the tribunal.
