Press Freedom & Land Defence – JHR Indigenous Media Talks
WeirFoulds Partner Peter Jacobsen will be speaking at Press Freedom & Land Defence, hosted by JHR Indigenous Media Talks, on November 5, 2020 at 12:00 P.M.
On September 4, 2020, independent Oneida journalist Karl Dockstader was arrested while covering 1492 Land Back Lane – the site of a Six-Nations action aimed at the reclamation of a section of land slated for housing development – preventing him from continuing his reporting.
Dockstader is one of several journalists who have been arrested while covering Indigenous land defense actions in Canada. Many other journalists have been blocked from observing these actions at all.
What impact do the arrests of journalists like Dockstader have on press freedom in Canada? Why is this particularly important in the case of Indigenous movements? How can journalists protect their rights?
Join Karl himself, award-winning journalist and media rights advocate Karyn Pugliese, and media law expert Peter Jacobsen for an in-depth discussion of these important issues. Moderated by award-winning journalist and current JHR media trainer Brandi Morin.
