The Asian community is often seen as a monolith, and Asians are often depicted in media in a superficial manner that reinforces harmful stereotypes. Join us for a fireside chat about the exciting, growing diversity of Asian representation in media. Learn about the importance of reflecting the diversity of the Asian community, why representation in all forms of media and entertainment matters, and some of the work being done to bring the full scope of that diversity to the screen. Through examples, speakers will talk to us about stereotypes and the Asian diaspora.
We will be joined by Madelyn Chung, founder of The RepresentASIAN Project, who will be moderating a discussion with guests Anita Lee, TIFF’s newly appointed Chief Programming Officer and founder of the Reel Asian Film Festival and Danielle Wong, English professor at the University of British Columbia with an interest in historical and contemporary relationships between races.
