Claire Copland is an Associate in the Commercial Litigation Practice Group at WeirFoulds.

Claire’s practice focuses on trial and appellate advocacy. She represents businesses and individuals in complex commercial and contractual disputes, director and officer liability matters, fraud claims, shareholder disputes, real property litigation, employment disputes, negligence claims, and injunctions. She has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on motions, applications, and trials, and has represented clients in appeals in the Ontario Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. She has also acted in private arbitrations.

During law school, Claire was a member of Osgoode’s competitive negotiation team and a Dean’s Fellow for first year public and constitutional law. She was also a mentor with the Osgoode Women’s Network.

Before joining WeirFoulds, Claire articled and was an associate at a regional Toronto-based law firm focused on business and public law.

  • Counsel for the Respondent in a 4-day arbitration of a complex multi-million dollar contractual dispute.
  • Counsel for the Defendant and Plaintiff by Counterclaim in a 9-day trial involving fraud, breach of fiduciary duties, and breach of contract claims.
  • Lead counsel in a civil fraud action and successfully obtained a Mareva injunction.
  • Counsel for the Applicant, a local softball association, in a successful application under the Not-for-Profit-Corporations Act, in which section 191 of Act was used to compel a not-for-profit corporation to comply with its by-laws and grant the Applicant membership.
  • Successfully responded to an appeal of an order granting partial summary judgment.
  • Successfully opposed a motion for a certificate of pending litigation. Obtained substantial indemnity costs on the basis that the injunction was an abuse of process.
