The WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup is the premier trial advocacy competition for law schools in Ontario. WeirFoulds LLP organizes and sponsors the annual competition in which student teams conduct trials before a Superior Court judge with witnesses and a jury. The teams vie for the right to represent Ontario in the Sopinka Cup, Canada’s national trial advocacy competition held annually in Ottawa.
Established in 1988, the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup is named in honour of the late Honourable John D. Arnup OC, QC, a legendary Canadian litigator, former partner of WeirFoulds, and esteemed member of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
In organizing and sponsoring the competition, WeirFoulds is delighted to promote principles of professionalism and litigation excellence among Ontario law students while celebrating the remarkable legacy of the late Justice Arnup. More than a competition—the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup is a launchpad for the next generation of Canadian trial lawyers.
The Honourable John D. Arnup, a titan of Canadian law, left an indelible mark on the profession as a litigator, jurist, and legal pioneer.
Following his call to the bar in 1935, Justice Arnup soon emerged as a gifted advocate and leader of the Canadian litigation bar. He practiced law in Toronto at a firm that in 1950 was known as Mason, Foulds, Arnup, Walter & Weir, and is now known as WeirFoulds LLP. In 1951, Justice Arnup became a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada (now called the Law Society of Ontario) and later became Treasurer (presiding officer). In this role, he made exceptional contributions to legal education and pioneered the universal legal aid system in Ontario.
In 1970, Justice Arnup was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario where he served with distinction for fifteen (15) years. The WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup serves as a tribute to Justice Arnup’s outstanding contributions to Canada and the legal profession during a career that spanned over 50 years.
Ontario law schools compete annually in the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup. Each school selects a team of two student advocates. Full trials are held in a Toronto courtroom before a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and a jury of assessors. Competitors present their case, from opening statement, examinations-in-chief and cross-examinations, through to closing argument. Experienced litigation lawyers act as the assessors, determining which teams will advance.
The winning team and the second-place team at the WeirFoulds-Arnup Cup advance to represent Ontario at the Sopinka Cup in Ottawa. Student teams from across Canada compete at the Sopinka Cup to be crowned national champion.
