WeirFoulds Congratulates Bryan Finlay, Q.C. on Being Awarded The Advocates’ Society Medal

WeirFoulds is pleased to announce that Bryan Finlay, Q.C. was awarded The Advocates’ Society Medal at a gala dinner on February 2019.

The Advocates’ Society Medal is the highest expression of esteem that the Society can convey to one of its members. It is intended to honour those who have demonstrated clearly their pre-eminence as counsel and who are acknowledged unequivocally as leaders of the bar, who have been dedicated and active members of The Advocates’ Society, and who have made a significant contribution to the profession of law and to the well-being of the community at large.

This award is especially meaningful to Bryan because the Honourable John D. Arnup, Q.C., for whom Bryan worked as a junior when he joined WeirFoulds, is an earlier recipient of the award.

At WeirFoulds, Bryan has had a broad practice. He has excelled in everything from securities and competition law to ‘bet the company’ commercial litigation, estates, class actions and public and constitutional law. His list of reported cases is lengthy, and includes many landmark cases and cases that generations of lawyers have studied in law school.

Bryan was called to the Bar in 1969. He is a past director of The Advocates’ Society, and has actively participated as a speaker and an instructor in numerous programs of The Advocates’ Society over the years. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and an Honorary Overseas Member of the Commercial Bar Association (England & Wales).

Bryan’s contributions to the profession of law and the community at large are significant and numerous. Bryan has many notable achievements, including being awarded the prestigious 2012 Ontario Bar Association Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation, being the first recipient of the McMurtry Medal from Pro Bono Law Ontario in 2004 for outstanding contribution to the delivery of pro bono legal services, accepting an invitation from the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute to join the Advisor Roster for Toronto in 2015, and being recognized as a leading litigator in numerous publications and directories, including Chambers Canada, the Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory, the Lexpert®/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, Best Lawyers® in Canada and Benchmark Canada, the Guide to Canada’s Leading Litigation Firms and Attorneys.
