WeirFoulds initiates Thalidomide litigation

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]WeirFoulds LLP has initiated litigation against the Attorney General of Canada on behalf of the Thalidomide Survivors Task Group and six individual Thalidomide survivors.

The claim, filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on February 16, 2021, seeks compensation for the plaintiffs on the grounds that the federal government violated the plaintiffs’ rights under sections 7 and 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Among other things, the plaintiffs allege that the federal government failed to comply with its repeated undertakings to provide full support to Thalidomide survivors, and that the government’s current funding programs are inadequate, discriminatory, and constitute a violation of the plaintiffs’ rights to equality, life, liberty and security.
