WeirFoulds’ Marie-Andrée Vermette appointed as Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario

WeirFoulds is delighted to announce that former Partner Marie-Andrée Vermette has been appointed as Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario (Toronto).

The Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the appointment on March 3, 2021. Marie-Andrée replaces Mr. Justice P.M. Perell (Toronto), who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective May 5, 2020.

Marie-Andrée was a partner at WeirFoulds LLP for almost 20 years and Chair of the firm’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group for four years. She was involved in some of the most publicized and sophisticated corporate/commercial disputes, class actions, and public law cases.

“This is an incredible honour and recognition of Marie-Andrée’s legal skills and contributions to the legal landscape in Ontario and Canada,” says Wayne Egan, Managing Partner at WeirFoulds.  “While we are sad to lose Marie-Andrée as a member of our partnership, we know that our judiciary in Ontario will be greatly enhanced with her on the bench.”

Marie-Andrée’s reputation as an innovative litigator and skilled advocate have resulted in her repeated recognition as a leading practitioner in industry publications, as well as appointments to the leadership teams of various organizations, including Vice-President of the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario (AJEFO), a member of the Board of Governors of the Université de l’Ontario français, and Co-chair of the E-Hearings Task Force established by The Advocates’ Society, the Ontario Bar Association, the Federation of Ontario Law Associations, and the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.

We wish Marie-Andrée the very best as she takes on her new role as Madam Justice Vermette, and thank her for her immense contributions to WeirFoulds over the past 20 years.
